The Sierra Club endorsed some winners on Tuesday, especially Brian Frosh, who earned a well-deserved place on the ballot. In Howard County, our endorsed candidates, Clarence Lam and Eric Ebersole, will be on the ballot; Terri Hill will be the candidate for the third Delegate's position in District 12.

In District 13, Guy Guzzone will compete for the Senate seat. Our endorsed candidates, Shane Pendergrass and Frank Turner, will be candidates for Delegate, along with Vanessa Atterbeary.

Today the Washington Post published a substantive editorial about Maryland's Attorney General race and came down firmly on the side of Brian Frosh, Sierra Club's endorsed candidate. The Post's Editorial Board highlighted Frosh's environmental credentials as follows: "At once self-effacing and substantive, Mr. Frosh has inspired bipartisan respect as a legislator who gets big things done without unduly tooting his own horn. He has shaped and sponsored much of Maryland’s most important environmental legislation for years, including measures to protect the Chesapeake Bay and promote recycling and cleaner cars."

The Post also revealed that Jon Cardin, Frosh's chief opponent, skipped almost 3/4 of the votes taken in the House Ways and Means Committee this year. Is there any clearer choice for AG than Brian Frosh? Read for yourselves the other good reasons the Post gives for their endorsement

The first of 3 scheduled Gubernatorial debates is set for Wednesday at 7 pm on NBC 4 out of Washington and on Maryland Public Television from Baltimore.
Heather Mizeur will be onstage to publicize her policy driven campaign. Be sure to tune in. Better yet, organize a debate watching party (click here to download our debate watching party tool kit). Let your friends know there is must-see TV this Wednesday night.

With your help we can elect an environmental champion as our next Governor. Get involved through Maryland Sierra Club, or directly with the Heather Mizeur campaign.

Your Chapter and Group Political Committees have been hard at work interviewing candidates and we have come up with a list of excellent candidates for the state and local races. Please check out our endorsements (which are still in progress).

After Maryland Sierra Club's endorsement of Heather Mizeur for Governor in January, we have been hard at work reaching out to Sierra Club members around the state to let them know why we support Heather, and how they can get involved in the campaign to elect her.  With your help we can elect an environmental champion as our next Governor.

The political committee has been very busy interviewing candidates and making endorsements. The next step is supporting our endorsed candidates. One of the things we definitely want to do is to work the polling places in as many priority precincts as we can -- handing out flyers listing our endorsed candidates. Printing those flyers will cost money and right now we have very little of it in our PAC. So I urge all of you to donate to our PAC as much as you can afford. When we support candidates in this way they notice, and they are more motivated to support us once elected.

The Sierra Club, Maryland Chapter is proud to announce its endorsement of Delegate Heather Mizeur in the Maryland Gubernatorial election. The organization offered this statement.
“Heather Mizeur’s principled stand against converting the Cove Point LNG import facility to an export facility was a strong factor in our decision to endorse her.  She reflects the Sierra Club’s concern that exporting natural gas will raise energy prices domestically and incentivize an increase in the dangerous practice of fracking,” said Betsy Johnson, Political Chair of the Maryland Chapter.
As a delegate from Montgomery County’s District 20, Mizeur consistently demonstrated that she has the values, integrity, and dedication to promote and defend environmental causes. Mizeur authored legislation to put a moratorium on fracking until the state can prove it can be done safely, and has helped to pass legislation protecting Maryland’s landowners from water contamination due to fracking.

The Sierra Club endorsement of Heather Mizeur for Governor is already earning some great media coverage. We'll post the stories we find. Comment if you find something we've missed. Feel free to pass along our press release to other publications.

Washington PostMizeur wins backing of Sierra Club in Maryland's Democratic Primary for Governor

Del. Heather R. Mizeur (D-Montgomery) has won the endorsement of the Maryland chapter of the Sierra Club in her bid to become the state’s next governor.

The group is the first environmental organization to endorse in the competitive Democratic primary for governor, which includes two better-known and better-funded candidates: Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown and Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler.

“Delegate Mizeur is a true environmental champion who leads the fight to ensure that all Maryland families have access to clean water, healthy air and open spaces,” Josh Tulkin, state director of the Sierra Club’s Maryland chapter said in a statement. “Heather isn’t afraid to speak her mind and stand up to special interests.” Read more

The Sierra Club endorsed Del. Heather Mizeur in the race for governor Monday, the first major environmental group to back a candidate in the contest.

While Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown has dominated the endorsements in the heated Democratic primary campaign, Mizeur has recently picked up some coveted backers, including the Sierra Club.

Mizeur, a Montgomery County Democrat, has also collected the backing from women's groups, including EMILY'S list and the political action committee of the Maryland National Organization for Women. Read more
